"The start of the winter season on Flumserberg is my favorite moment!"

When the first snowflakes fall, the most beautiful time of the year begins for Katja Wildhaber-Rupf. In this interview, member of the Executive Board and Head of Marketing & Sales at Bergbahnen Flumserberg talks about the special atmosphere at the start of the season, new highlights and explains why Flumserberg is much more than just a place of work for her.

Your favorite moment of the year is the start of the winter season on Flumserberg. What makes this event so special for you?

Yes, exactly. I particularly like the start of the winter season and especially the time just before it. Thanks to our flexible start to the season on the Flumserberg, the excitement and anticipation increases from day to day, sometimes even from hour to hour, after the first snowflakes have fallen. The team spirit is then particularly high, because all employees work with a lot of extra effort towards the same goal and work through countless tasks so that we can welcome the first snow sports fans at 8 o'clock in the morning.

In addition to the tried and tested offers, there are also new features this season. What are you personally looking forward to the most?

Last winter, we were able to present our guests with our latest offer - night skiing in the Flumserberg Galaxie. This nocturnal spectacle of color was very popular and well attended. This winter, night skiing will also take place on Fridays from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm on the Chrüz piste, for the first time on Friday, 26.12.2025 and as additional evenings on Saturday, 27.12.2025 and Tuesday, 27.01.2026. We have extended the light art installations for this season. I'm particularly looking forward to being able to admire our new, brightly colored UFO at the Chrüz mountain station for the first time.

Sustainability is also becoming increasingly important in winter sports. How does the Flumserberg ski area stand out in this area?

According to studies, the greatestCO2 emissions from a day's skiing are generated when traveling by car. We are in the unique position of having the Unterterzen train station right next to the valley station of the SeeJet gondola lift, making it easy to get here by train. The Aare Linth (IR35) runs daily from Zurich main station in 58 minutes and the S17 in 38 minutes from Rapperswil, hourly and directly to Unterterzen. Thanks to the RailAway and SOB offers, guests can buy a combined train journey and ski day ticket and thus benefit twice over. From this winter season, the PostBus from Flums to Flumserberg Tannenboden will also run every half hour from 20.12.2025 to 08.03.2026 and on Fridays and Saturdays there will even be a late ride at 22.45 to the valley. This good public transport connection is a real unique selling point for us - or as they say in marketing: our USP!

Your job is your passion, your workplace is your home. How is it that you feel so strongly connected to your work and our region?

I grew up on the Flumserberg, this is where my roots are. Many destinations advertise with the most beautiful panorama, versatility and good public transport connections. I am convinced that our homeland really does offer this. The Churfirsten mountain range and the Spitzmeilen area are unique and beautiful to look at in both summer and winter. With its mountains and lake, our region offers plenty of space for active recreation and shopping opportunities in Sargans and Buchs, and with the aforementioned public transport connections, our region is also optimally connected to long-distance transport.

What does it take for a winter season to be an all-round success for you?

A great team that sticks together and helps each other. Lots of satisfied guests, snow, sun and enough time to enjoy it all a little.

On the weekend of November 22 and 23, 2025, the Flumserberg mountain railroads will start the winter season with a partial operation.
