Through the Lens: Photographs from Everyday Life in Psychiatry

Photographs from Everyday Life in Psychiatry by Willi Keller (*1944) and Roland Schneider (*1939).

Unlike typical clinic documentation, the photographs by Willi Keller and Roland Schneider offer a unique, intimate glimpse into everyday psychiatry. Whilst the artist Willi Keller (*1944) worked as a nurse at Burghölzli in Zurich in 1970, the well-known industrial photographer Roland Schneider (*1939) found himself, due to a mental health crisis, as a patient in the Cantonal Psychiatric Clinic in Solothurn in the summer of 1987.⁣ ⁣ The view through the lens is direct, never euphemistic nor voyeuristic, but always turned towards and close to the person. The openness, with which the clinic management let the photographers work freely, is astonishing and unthinkable today.⁣ In cooperation with the Historisches Museum Olten.
